THE FLOWER
Site-specific installation (indoor / outdoor) & performative installation
2011
The Flower is a sculptural and performative installation exploring reflection, fragmentation, and the relationship between body, space, and perception. Composed of reflective materials and light, the work creates an immersive environment in which the viewer’s presence activates shifting visual and spatial experiences.
Originally commissioned in 2008 by the Boghossian Foundation for the opening exhibition of Villa Empain (Brussels), The Flower later entered an international performance and exhibition trajectory. In 2011, the work was curated by Robert Wilson and produced for Voluptuous Panic, the 18th Annual Watermill Center Summer Benefit, where it was presented at The Watermill Center, a laboratory for the Arts and Humanities in Long Island, New York. During this period, The Flower also evolved into performative and costume-based iterations, presented both at The Watermill Center and at the Second Annual German Watermill Benefit at Artist Studio Elmgreen & Dragset in Berlin.
Subsequently, the work was presented in public and institutional contexts, including Nuit Blanche Brussels (2015), JOHN DOE IN THE MEGACITY – Utopia + Dystopia in Architecture at Halles St-Géry / Sint-Goriks Hallen (Brussels, 2016), and Orient trifft Okzident, an exhibition project marking the 150th anniversary of German poet Friedrich Rückert, presented at Rathaus Schweinfurt (Germany, 2016).
Across its different presentations, The Flower has continuously adapted to architectural, performative, and curatorial contexts, existing at the intersection of installation, performance, and scenographic environment.
